LIBERTARIAN VIEWPOINT

I was struck this month by the insidiousness of our income tax system. This blinding flash of the obvious was brought about by a personal example, but I will use fiction to relate it. Suppose two business people were friends. Maybe one does home repair while the other does some kind of computer work. On occasion, the they work for each other. Maybe the computer person needs his roof fixed, while the repair contractor wants to do something not business related with their computer. And, being good and upstanding business men, they always pay each other with a check. Imagine

LIBERTARIAN VIEWPOINT

In September and October, I discussed the political aspects of government ownership of infrastructure. The specific case was the proposed sewer system in southern NCC. You may have noticed sewers in the news again on Thanksgiving day. As many of you know, Smyrna recently annexed five hundred acres of NCC (the town straddles the NC/Kent border). The state was opposed to this because it doesn't fit their concept of where people should be allowed to build a house. In retribution, they withheld $2.9 million of state funds that Smyrna was entitled to. Smyrna is served by the Kent

LIBERTARIAN VIEWPOINT

I have been having an ongoing debate with my barber about Globalization. Almost every visit, he goes off on how we soon won't have any jobs left in this country. As we see more and more professions (such as computer programming, about which I care deeply) being outsourced to China or India, it is sometimes difficult to focus on the positives! I went to the CATO web site to see what they had to say:

"'Globalization' describes the ongoing global trend toward the freer flow of trade and investment across borders and the resulting integration of

LIBERTARIAN VIEWPOINT

I had intended to write about an arguement I am having with my barber over globalization, but it will have to wait until next month. I can't pass up the above the fold headline from Sunday's (9/28) News Journal: "NCCo stops sewer changeovers" as a follow up to last month's Viewpoint. "Residents of a dozen communities who have requested NCC sewer hookups ... cannot get them because the government has stopped acting on requests ..." The basic problem is that there is a law which limits the fees the county can charge for hookups to $6500, and the county says that's not enough. Bear in

LIBERTARIAN VIEWPOINT

I was having lunch with a small group last week when the subject of public infrastructure came up - sewer systems to be precise. I had complained that NC County had decided to build a system in the southern reaches of the county even though Artesian water had offered to do it privately. Turns out that I was the only one who had a problem with that! After I commented that the more private ownership we had, the better, the following question was asked: "what happens when the private water company decides it isn't profitable to serve a group of customers"? My immediate, unthinking,

The party has a rather attractive sign available for you to use when you are doing street cleanup. If we are going to do the work, why not get credit for it? The double sided sign is mounted on a sturdy tripod-like stand, and is easy to move around. At present, it is in Wilmington, but your county chairs can arrange to get it from me.
